Chapter Seventy-Six: New Trouble—A Spy Within a Plot!
At this moment, the wounds on the great Kunpeng had nearly healed. It began to feel its lost strength return. When the little Kunpeng noticed Chen Yi, it immediately twisted its small body and darted over. Chen Yi shielded it with one hand, while the other engaged in fierce combat with the zombies that had caught up. Sensing Chen Yi’s assistance, the great Kunpeng wasted no time in launching a counterattack. Its massive body thrashed violently, and with a casual sweep, tens of thousands of zombies were sent flying, opening a wide path for Chen Yi and his companions.
Hu Sanhan, leveraging his teleportation skill, helped Chen Yi take the little Kunpeng to safety. Once the great Kunpeng was certain its child was secure, it instantly stirred up a colossal wave, rendering all the zombies in the sea powerless. Chen Yi observed that while the zombies had managed to resist somewhat in the water earlier, their fighting strength was drastically reduced after being caught in the waterspout. It seemed the speed of the blue zombies diminished with the current. Chu Yunxi had already recorded these findings in the bunker.
By now, the corpse tide had struck more than ten times, each wave bringing different types of zombies with unique behaviors. Yet, there was no doubt that most shared common strengths and weaknesses. Thus, keeping a record of these traits was especially important.
Lu Kai stared at the computer screen for a long time, clicking his tongue in admiration. “Boss is truly remarkable. I’m completely in awe. Honestly, just now, I was racking my brains over how to turn this dire situation around, but clearly, it was unnecessary.”
“Oh, please!” Chu Yunxi smiled lightly, her gaze never leaving the man on the screen. “Chen Yi is no weakling. In fact, you know that better than I do.”
Lu Kai chuckled sheepishly and shrugged. “Oops, you caught me. But it’s fine—if the boss’s wife calls me out, I’ll take it.”
Just then, Chu Yunxi sensed another force infiltrating the bunker. She drew her pistol at once and signaled Lu Kai and the others to get ready. Lu Kai sensed something was off as well. He made an OK gesture, and together, they moved forward. As soon as they were prepared and someone pushed open the door to the bunker, they raised their guns in unison.
“Don’t shoot!”
A group of young women appeared before them, looking pitiful and covered in wounds left by zombie claws.
“Oh my god!” Lu Kai gasped. “Yunxi—sister-in-law, we’re about to become sitting ducks. These girls are literally zombies on their feet!”
“Shut up!” Chu Yunxi snapped, cutting him off, her brow furrowed as she strode forward with her pistol drawn.
“You take everyone and retreat from the other side. Go meet up with your brother!”
“No way!” Lu Kai immediately protested. “If I leave you here, the boss will have my hide!”
“If you don’t leave now, I’ll have your hide first!” Chu Yunxi’s face turned cold, exuding the same ruthless decisiveness as Chen Yi, which made Lu Kai retreat a few steps in fright. Fine, this woman was truly formidable.
Taking a deep breath, Lu Kai could only grit his teeth and cautiously lead the others through another door. “Sister-in-law, you have to make it out alive!”
Chu Yunxi nodded. “Don’t worry, so long as I’m not dying beside Chen Yi, I’ll crawl out if I have to.”
The wounded girls were momentarily stunned by their exchange. What kind of people were these, showing no fear of death at a time like this?
Steadying herself, Chu Yunxi fixed her gaze on the women, who were on the verge of turning. “Speak. How did you find this place?”
In unison, the women replied, “It was just a coincidence. We stumbled upon this bunker by accident…”
Bang! With a single shot, Chu Yunxi executed one of them, her eyes growing colder. “Don’t take me for a fool. This is a pit thirty meters underground. It took us over ten days to dig. How could just anyone stumble across it?”
“I don’t know,” the leading woman stammered, her eyes darting uneasily. Clearly, she hadn’t just wandered in by chance.
Recognizing this, Chu Yunxi continued firing without hesitation. She felt no need to show mercy to lying enemies.
“Wait!” As her companions fell one by one, a girl with the lightest injury finally couldn’t hold back. “Please, just let me say one thing—just one!”
Seeing her like this, Chu Yunxi nodded. “Fine. Say your piece, and then I’ll send you on your way.”
“No!” The girl’s breathing quickened, her eyes full of terror. “You can’t kill me. I know a secret!”
Chu Yunxi was about to let her speak when Chen Yi suddenly appeared and killed the girl with a single slash.
“Why? Chen Yi, she…” Chu Yunxi trembled, looking at him.
Chen Yi pointed to the knife in the woman’s hand. “If you had let her get close, she would’ve killed you instantly. I don’t know who sent her, but I’m certain she had ulterior motives. Someone like that cannot be allowed to live.”
Chu Yunxi drew a sharp breath. Had she shown mercy just now, she would have died with no hope of burial. But who could have known about their base here, and orchestrated everything so flawlessly? This left Chu Yunxi utterly baffled.
“Don’t worry,” Chen Yi said, approaching slowly. “I don’t fully understand it either. What matters now is that we leave. The base has already been compromised. We’ll destroy it and start anew elsewhere.”
Though reluctant, Chu Yunxi understood what had to be done. She nodded. As she followed “Chen Yi” out, she suddenly raised her pistol and aimed at his back.
The man walking ahead chuckled. “What’s this? Do you think I’m an imposter?”
“Are you not?” Chu Yunxi’s eyes were sharp. “You covered your tracks well, cut off all communications so I couldn’t know what was happening outside, but you can’t fool me. There’s no way you could have made everything flawless.”
“Chen Yi” peeled off a human-skin mask, revealing a delicate yet cruel face. “You’re right. I’m not your man. I’m a killer from the X Special Agent Organization, codename Viper. I came today to kill all of you.”
Chu Yunxi gave him no chance—she fired at once. Yet, the man did not die; his wound began to heal. Only then did Chu Yunxi’s heavenly eye see that he had three hearts, and she froze in shock.
“So, you too have gained special powers?”
