Mary was utterly shocked by everything about Chen Yi before her. Why couldn’t he be defeated? Maintaining such composure in this moment was something few could manage. After all, Mary had encountered countless people, but very few had endured so much while retaining such resilience.

Without hesitation, Chen Yi charged at the mutated zombies, swiftly dispatching two or three with his blade. Watching this unfold, Mo Bai trembled all over—the man before him was terrifying. From Chen Yi’s movements and expression, it was clear he had no intention of retreating. Evidently, Chen Yi was determined to strike with fatal force, harboring no other thoughts.

Taking a deep breath, Mo Bai felt a surge of jealousy. Why, though both human, did Chen Yi possess such strength while he had nothing? Mary could transform thanks to a pill, at least achieving success, but only he had been bitten by zombies to gain this chance.

Mo Bai had always known Mary’s experience far surpassed his, yet he deliberately suppressed her, denying her any opportunity. These were selfish times, and everyone sought their share. Even though Mo Bai regarded Mary as a kindred spirit, he never showed mercy—this was a secret he would never reveal to her.

Meanwhile, Mary fought actively against the zombies. As she battled, a strange sensation arose—this power felt strangely akin to her own. But the horde only grew larger, leaving no time for reflection. She pressed on, accelerating her attacks to resolve the immediate peril.

Yet the situation did not improve. These zombies had been injected with special compounds by Mo Bai. Even in death, they would rise and obey commands. This chilling reality left everyone shuddering—what kind of ruthless soul could commit such an unscrupulous act?

At that moment, Chu Yunxi noticed the little girl in her arms stir. Excited, she helped Chen Yaxi to her feet. “Yaxi, how do you feel?” Chen Yaxi looked up, dazed, taking a while to regain clarity. “Sister, what happened to me just now?”

Tears of joy welled in Chu Yunxi’s eyes, which she quickly wiped away before turning to Chen Yi. “Brother Yi! Yaxi has regained consciousness!”

Chen Yi, still burning with fury, felt a flicker of clarity upon hearing this.

He glanced back—indeed, Chen Yaxi was awake, but the zombie threat remained unabated.

“Take care of her. I’ll handle this!” Chen Yi charged at the enemies again. Chen Yaxi wanted to help but was held back by Chu Yunxi.

Chu Yunxi disapproved. “You may think you’re strong, but you were just injected with anesthesia and are still poisoned. You’re not fit to act.”

Chen Yaxi pouted, stung inside. “Sister, I know you’re right, but I can’t stand that Brother was ambushed.”

“Child,” Chu Yunxi shook her head, “that sounds like you think I don’t care about Chen Yi. In truth, I worry more than any of you—but I can’t show it.”

Though battling foes, Chen Yi heard his wife’s heartfelt confession and was deeply moved. Since she had spoken so plainly, there was no need to doubt the future.

“Brothers!” Chen Yi chuckled softly, “We can’t lose to these artificial zombies!”

Artificial zombies? Lu Kai and the others exchanged knowing glances. No wonder these creatures had been impervious to attack—they were artificially created!

The men aboard the aircraft carrier immediately grew fearful.

Chen Yi said no more but voiced his deepest concern. Zombies came in two types: artificial ones that required a trigger; if this failed, they would attack their masters, resulting in irreversible disaster. But these zombies clearly showed absolute obedience to their controllers rather than hostility.

As the creator of these artificial zombies, Mo Bai understood well how outrageous this was—most would not believe it. Yet at times like this, one could not ignore the stakes.

Taking a deep breath, Mo Bai quickly composed himself and unleashed another wave of zombies, aiming to overwhelm Chen Yi’s mind.

But he had underestimated Chen Yi.

These sudden hordes were no natural disaster; Chen Yi immediately recognized them as the vile tactics of the X Organization.

Once he understood their despicable methods, everything became much clearer.

Chen Yi turned his gaze to the woman beside him. “Mary, since you once served the X Organization, can you—”

“No.” Mary shook her head gently, sighing helplessly.

“I understand what you say, but I can’t do it. Not because I don’t want to, but at times like this, I can’t control others’ minds. You wouldn’t understand the X Organization’s true intentions!”

Chu Yunxi frowned. “We reconciled with you, and you said you were willing to stand united. Why change your mind now?”

Mary faced Chu Yunxi, shaking her head. “I’m not refusing to listen. But you must know, many things are interconnected; one wrong move could cause disaster.”

“So what are you telling me?” Chu Yunxi sneered again.

“You mean you think I refuse to cooperate for your own good?”

Mary’s face flushed with embarrassment.

“No, I have my reasons! Since the X Organization created these zombies as a survival tactic, they have guarded against our betrayal. If we act, their undead army will relentlessly track me. I had a prior agreement with my superiors to leave the organization, so they didn’t hunt me down!”

“So...” Chen Yi spoke slowly, “if you betray the X Organization fully, your life would again be in danger? Even if not from natural disasters, you would face death from human causes?”

“Yes.” Mary closed her eyes and sighed in resignation. “Blame me—I was foolish to provoke those I shouldn’t have. I should have understood this from the start!”
