Chapter 142: This Damn Need to Win
With Chen Yi’s command, everyone focused their gaze and energy on the battle ahead. Although the giant octopus was massive, its size was also its weakness. It had no defense against Chen Yi’s attacks; even its fierce roars could only match Chen Yi’s strikes, especially since Chen Yi had many allies supporting him, making his combat prowess all the more formidable.
At this moment, the giant octopus sensed the impending danger. It was already too late to retreat. Chen Yi prepared for a final charge, swiftly raising his musket and aiming for the deadly weak points—the octopus’s eyes—before pulling the trigger.
The instant the trigger was pulled, the octopus was blasted far back, its roar turning powerless as it fell into the water. Before it could react, a massive blade descended, severing its head.
Afterwards, Chen Yi’s twin blades reverted to their single-blade mode.
“Boss, that was incredible,” Lu Kai exclaimed, applauding in admiration.
He knew Chen Yi’s abilities were versatile, but he hadn’t expected him to be this formidable. Each time, the power he harnessed from the Calamity Curse Plate was extraordinary. Compared to their own special abilities, Chen Yi seemed more ordinary, yet he wielded an unparalleled genetic power—the mutable nature of genes was, after all, the strongest force anyone could command.
“Enough chatter,” Chen Yi said, his brow furrowed, showing no sign of relaxation. “The urgent task now is to eliminate the enemy. The waterborne zombies won’t wait for us to catch our breath.”
As he spoke, the zombies began to move. Seeing their rapid approach, Chen Yi didn’t hesitate to launch a fierce counterattack against the giant Kunpeng bird. Without a word, he engaged in close combat.
Empowered by the ant gene’s poisonous light, Chen Yi’s twin blades cut through the zombies, leaving them bloodied and retreating back into the water.
Sensing Chen Yi’s overwhelming strength, the zombie horde dared not advance further. Instead, they silently observed, and then, upon hearing an unfamiliar flute melody, they submerged into the depths.
“Don’t run,” Chen Yaxi tried to charge forward again, but Chen Yi held her back.
Pouting, Chen Yaxi complained, “If you won’t let me fight now, when will I get the chance to capture anyone?”
“Capture whom?” Chen Yi smiled again. “These guys are merely pawns, exploited and useless.”
Watching their foes retreat farther, Chen Yaxi sighed but quickly grasped his implication. “You’re thinking of something else, aren’t you?”
Chen Yi smiled at her. “If you want to know what I’m planning, just keep watching.”
Then he closed his eyes.
Though Chu Yunxi and Chen Yaxi were unsure of his true intentions, it was clear that the situation was grave.
Meanwhile, the zombies had submerged into the deep water and returned to dormancy.
Inside a submarine, a man and a woman sneered as they continued their covert operations.
“Unexpectedly, Chen Yi has evolved his power to such an extent. It seems we must intensify our efforts. Only by fully unleashing Chen Yi’s genetic potential can we prepare the perfect body for our master.”
The secretive X Organization’s scheme was not aimed at humanity’s destruction but at acquiring the strongest genes. However, their initial research inadvertently gave rise to zombies when the apocalypse struck—zombies that had developed consciousness.
With their own consciousness, the zombies could no longer be fully controlled, throwing the situation into chaos.
The submarine continued to follow the giant Kunpeng’s path, the two operators stealthily monitoring every move, unwilling to miss any opportunity.
Back with Chen Yi and the others, they remained inside the giant Kunpeng’s body.
“Brother, I think you’d better stop causing trouble and stay inside me. As for food, I’ll send the little Kunpeng to find some,” the giant Kunpeng said.
“That won’t do,” Chen Yi frowned.
“In the apocalypse, no one is nobler than another.”
“But now, we need help. You can’t stop it even if you want to.”
The giant Kunpeng was resolute, and even Chen Yi was powerless to argue.
Meanwhile, those clinging to the giant serpent were far less fortunate. Though the serpent shielded them with its body, offering some protection, it was incomplete. Many who had once followed Zhou Sheng now began to wail in pain.
The injuries they bore were severe.
“Boss!” Hu Sanhan asked, curious. “If you want to save people, why not save everyone? Why only save us and leave the others outside...?”
“Those who haven’t faced life-and-death trials don’t understand how terrifying survival can be,” Chen Yi replied.
His actions were also a test—to see if this group could handle the situation responsibly.
If they could make the right choices, all would be well; if not, no one could blame anyone.
Those placed on the giant serpent began to complain bitterly.
“This Chen Yi is truly cruel—enjoying himself while leaving us in such a place!”
“Exactly!” a frail man said, crossing his arms with a malevolent glare. “Chen Yi just got lucky. If I ever get the chance, I’ll—”
Before he could finish, the giant serpent flung him into the water, where he was swallowed by aquatic monsters.
The others on the serpent fell silent instantly.
Though their situation was dire, dying now would be pointless.
They quickly reconsidered, resolving to fully submit.
Chen Yi understood through it all that human nature could not withstand too many tests.
At that moment, those people were likely cursing themselves deep down.
“Brother!” Chen Yaxi grabbed Chen Yi’s arm anxiously. “What do we do now in this situation?”
Chen Yi bent down, stroking her head with a smile.
“We must strive to survive.”
His gaze grew resolute once more.
“People must never give up their dignity. The reason we have stood firm all this way is because we are united.”
“Absolutely!” Hu Sanhan, Hals, Vero, Sun Dawei, and Lu Kai all nodded in agreement.
“With the boss leading, Sister Yunxi and Sister Yaxi helping, we have more hope for survival!”
