Chapter 155: Armed Threats? Useless!
"Of course we won't hand over Little White!"
Chen Yaxi shot a glance at the boy. "This guy is all skin and bones; if we throw him out, he’s as good as dead. Let’s be generous this time and protect him properly!"
"You!" The boy’s face turned livid. "What right do you have to call me Little White!"
Chen Yaxi shrugged. "What else should I call you? You didn't give us your name, so I just picked something at random. Of course, if you have an objection, feel free to say whatever you like!"
"Li Xingchen." The boy in white finally spoke, his voice hesitant. He looked conflicted. "I know what I did was unforgivable, and I have no defense against your resentment. But please, give me a chance—a chance to change your minds!"
While Chen Yaxi was considering a retort, Chen Yi had already flown toward the aircraft carrier. Inside the carrier, a group of researchers who had been hiding naturally noticed Chen Yi’s arrival and immediately rushed to the experimental cabin.
"Are we really going to release him?" A female member of the X Organization asked, her expression tight with anxiety. At a time like this, one wrong decision could cost them their heads.
"Don't worry." Professor Mo Bai, the lead researcher, looked at her with calm composure. "Since I’ve decided to do this, there is no way I can lose. Chen Yi is merely relying on his supernatural abilities, but we now possess the most powerful mutant zombie. Wasn't the whole point of keeping the Zombie King for experimentation to prepare for this very day?"
Although the logic held, the woman remained tense.
"Mary, why have you suddenly become so indecisive?" Mo Bai asked, sounding perplexed. "We’ve worked together for a long time; you should know my temperament."
"I do," Mary nodded, her tone firm and unyielding. "But you should know that Chen Yi has conducted extensive research on zombies. Trying to deal with him this way is like throwing an egg against a rock. It’s useless!"
"Shut up!"
Mo Bai’s patience had evaporated, his eyes turning cold. "Why won't you listen to reason? Do you not realize your position?"
Mary knew her position all too well. From the moment she joined the X Organization, she understood she was nothing more than a puppet, with no agency of her own. Yet, even then, Mo Bai—the mastermind—was never satisfied, constantly making demands and courting disaster. Since that was the case, Mary decided she was done playing along. She had joined in hopes of survival, but if the organization couldn't even provide that, there was nothing left to discuss. She tossed her membership badge to the floor.
Mo Bai’s gaze turned icy. He hadn't expected Mary, a core member, to take such a step. Trying to suppress his temper, he attempted to persuade her. "Mary, one must have a conscience. You can’t project your inner frustrations onto the organization; it has never wronged you."
This shameless remark made Mary scoff. "Never wronged me? So you really believe that? If you were as righteous as you claim, why would we be arguing like this? In the end, the X Organization acted without honor or justice first, which is why I have chosen to leave!"
"Don't talk nonsense!" Mo Bai grew agitated. "The X Organization has given you so much; can’t you show some appreciation?"
"Appreciation for what?" Mary sneered. Just as she was about to retort, the sound of chaos erupted from the deck. The two looked at the electronic display and saw that Chen Yi had already arrived, laying waste to a large number of their men in mere moments.
The situation forced both Mo Bai and Mary into a dilemma. If they didn't help handle this, none of them would survive.
"Boss," Mary’s eyes sharpened. "I will handle Chen Yi for you, but in exchange, you must let me leave the organization. Deal?"
Mo Bai was stunned. "You'd risk everything just to leave? Fine. You can go, but you must find a way to drive him off! The aircraft carrier is a vital asset the X Organization spent a fortune to secure during the apocalypse; it cannot be taken!"
Though Mo Bai detested Mary’s methods, he knew some things were inevitable, so he yielded. "Go. As long as you can get it done, I have no objections."
Mary headed out as agreed. Chen Yi had intended to strike while the iron was hot and capture the leader, but upon seeing the woman, he changed his mind. Her eyes were filled with cold calculation, and the smile on her lips was particularly sinister.
"Hi, handsome. You’ve got a lot of courage, coming here to cause trouble, don't you? Do you have any idea what kind of dragon's den this is? You shouldn't have come!"
Chen Yi frowned, his dual blades gripped tight. "You’ve wandered here for no reason—what are you planning?"
"Hand over Li Xingchen," Mary said, toying with a ring on her finger, her eyes glinting with cunning. "The boy betrayed our agreement and must be punished. I suggest you don't interfere, or this will involve you, too."
Chen Yi shook his head with a scoff, ignoring her warning. "Is that all? Betraying you? The X Organization was never a decent place to begin with; I wouldn't mind seeing it destroyed!"
Mary’s eyes turned cold, her fists clenching. She took a pill from her pocket, swallowed it, and her gaze sharpened. She cracked her joints, let out a roar, and a pair of wings sprouted instantly from her back, while sharp fangs erupted from her mouth.
"A zombie?" Chen Yi stared at the person who had just been a normal human, a sense of dread washing over him. The fact that a single pill could allow someone to alternate between human and monster was terrifying.
Seeing Chen Yi’s urgency, Mary felt even more smug. She had worked hard for a long time to earn the right to the pill that allowed for such free-form shifting. In her zombie form, though hideous, she was nearly invincible; the zombie state was practically a state of immortality.
"Boss, this one is interesting!" Lu Kai and Hu Sanhan rushed to Chen Yi’s side, their eyes locked on Mary. "A person turning into a zombie in an instant? I’d love to spar with her!"
"Don't act rashly," Chen Yi waved a hand, his expression resolute. "We need to think this through carefully. Look at her reactions—she is a mutant who retains human consciousness, not just a simple zombie!"
