Chapter Seventy-Nine The Top Target of Organization X—The Serum
Perhaps taking the initiative to cooperate with Chen Yi and the others was not the wisest strategy, but at least it preserved some advantages. In this current predicament, with danger closing in on all sides, protecting oneself was a prudent choice. With this thought in mind, the man immediately wore a look of resignation, shaking his head with a bitter smile.
“Ah, my life is hard enough as it is. In the organization, I’m really just an insignificant small-time thug. I don’t know much.”
“Meager as it may be, it’s still information. Speak,” Chu Yunxi replied, unimpressed by his act, a mocking smile on her lips. “I can tell you, trying to lie your way out of this is pointless.”
“So what?” The man showed no fear in the face of Chu Yunxi’s threat, instead flashing an easy smile. “Do you think I should be scared by your words and blurt out the truth?”
“There’s no reason to be afraid of her,” Chen Yi interjected, returning with supplies alongside several others. Their gazes were fixed on Chu Yunxi, and the disdain at the corners of their mouths was evident.
“There’s no need to complain about this kind of thing. If you don’t want to tell the truth, then leave. Why put on an act? Such hypocrisy only makes everyone uncomfortable,” he said coolly.
“Chen Yi!” Chu Yunxi looked over, worry in her eyes. “How can you just let him go? If he leaves, we’ll all be in trouble!”
“I’m not worried,” Chen Yi replied with calm indifference, clearly unconcerned. “I’ve already thought it through. This guy came to spy on us, so there are bound to be surveillance devices on him that we haven’t found. Rather than waiting to be caught off guard and destroyed, it’s better to act first and send him out!”
Hearing this, the man broke into a cold sweat. “I… I really know I was wrong. With zombies rampant outside, if you abandon me, I’ll be torn to pieces.”
“That’s not my concern,” Chen Yi answered without emotion, brushing his sleeve aside. “You don’t need to beg me. You’re the one who made these choices, not me. You’ve decided that your life is worthless. What can I do?”
“I…”
“Get out!” Hu Sanhan roared, brandishing the golden broadsword in his hand, ready to bring it down on the man’s head.
Terrified, the man fell to the ground, trembling, and scrambled away on all fours. His pathetic display made Chen Yi snort with derision.
Cowardly weakling!
Chu Yunxi glanced over, puzzled.
“Why did you really let him go?” she asked.
Chen Yi turned and shook his head. “They didn’t understand what I meant. How come you don’t either?”
Chu Yunxi was momentarily stunned, still confused. “I really don’t understand.”
Chen Yi pulled out his phone and pointed to a red dot moving steadily toward their old base. “Just as Hu Sanhan swung his blade, I managed to stick a transmitter onto him.”
“When did you prepare that?” Chu Yunxi was genuinely surprised. “Our equipment isn’t exactly complete. Something like that shouldn’t be…”
“Not rare at all!” Hu Sanhan interrupted, dumping all the transmitters he and Chen Yi had collected from defeated enemies nearby onto the ground.
Lu Kai and the others gasped. “That many? You spent an hour out there—were you just killing people? No, you were taking out those troublemakers?”
“Still not enough,” Chen Yi’s gaze grew cold. “From what Hu Sanhan and I have found, there should still be a company-level force hiding here.”
This discovery troubled Chen Yi. Although the number of zombies had recently decreased due to Kunpeng’s appearance, that didn’t mean the threat was gone. No one could predict what new variables the next wave of the undead would bring. No matter how you looked at it, it was a huge security risk.
Not wanting to be outmaneuvered, Chen Yi immediately devised a battle plan. “Waiting for a whole company to show itself before we move is out of the question. The best strategy is to strike first and catch them off guard.”
“You’re right,” Chu Yunxi agreed, standing by his side with the same sense of foreboding. The panic shown by that man earlier felt contrived. She was convinced that if someone was truly driven to the edge of life and death, they wouldn’t act like that. As a result, Chu Yunxi made a bold conjecture.
“Could it be that from the moment we arrived here, all the events that have unfolded have been orchestrated?”
Chen Yi looked at her approvingly and nodded. “Yes, you’ve seen through it too. I feel the same. We discovered the island first, but everything that happened afterward has been odd.”
What concerned Chen Yi most was the large group of soldiers hiding on the island. If they were here to fight monsters, that was another matter—but if they were conducting experiments, they had to be wiped out.
Moreover, despite repeated disasters, these people had remained hidden, never making a move, not even when their comrades were killed. That made them even more suspicious.
“Boss!” Lu Kai suddenly had an idea. “Should I try using my telepathy to investigate?”
“No,” Chen Yi refused immediately. “Hu Sanhan and I thought of that and tried it. Apart from nearly dying, we found no clues to the whereabouts of their boss.”
Clearly, the hidden boss was the mastermind behind the X Organization.
Although they hadn’t resolved everything, to boost morale, Chen Yi announced they had found a research dossier on human experiments at the site.
Upon opening it, they discovered detailed records of all mutant zombies and those who had been bitten and turned. According to the notes, many still wanted to survive, but once turned into zombies, they lacked a specific antidote to be restored.
“The formula!” Chu Yunxi’s eyes lit up. “So, the organization really is researching a cure!”
Chen Yi nodded. “From what we’ve gathered, if we can find the reagent first and identify compatible blood, we could preemptively suppress the zombie outbreak.”
“That’s so difficult!” Lu Kai scratched his head, frustrated. “People compatible with the medicine might not even exist, and the experiments could claim countless lives.”
“We might not have to sacrifice them,” Chen Yi replied calmly. “Looked at another way, the problem is simple. We have the reagent, but need suitable candidates. We’ll match the blood type required for the medicine, conduct small-scale tests, and not much blood will be needed.”
“This might be our only way out!” Chu Yunxi nodded firmly. “Let’s do as you say!”
