"Young master, there's a cave up ahead! Let's hurry inside!" shouted the last servant.

"Alright, inside!" Yan Chuan swiftly carried Mo Yuxi into the cave.

The cave twisted and turned, and after a brief winding path, opened into a spacious chamber. Yan Chuan quickly laid Mo Yuxi down upon a large stone.

"Oooh!" The wolves’ cries echoed again.

"Get back, get back!" At the cave entrance, the servant hurled stones at the remaining five wild wolves.

"Husband, I fear this time our luck has run out," Mo Yuxi said trembling.

"We'll hold this cave. Father and mother will surely send someone to rescue us," Yan Chuan replied, uncommonly calm.

"Ah!"

Another scream rang out at the entrance—the last servant had fallen. Yan Chuan peered out, just in time to see the five wolves tearing and devouring him. Blood splattered; in moments, the servant was ripped limb from limb.

Mo Yuxi seemed to understand.

"Dearest, you must go! The wolves are feasting; now is your chance to escape. Run away quickly, leave this place!" Mo Yuxi pleaded, her face pale as death.

"Absurd! I should flee? What happens to you if I leave?" Yan Chuan barked.

"There’s no time otherwise!"

"I'll carry you out. We leave together, as I promised! I vowed to protect you all my life!" Yan Chuan insisted.

"No, if you carry me, neither of us will escape. You must run alone—only then will you have a chance!" Mo Yuxi said urgently.

"You want me to leave?" Yan Chuan gazed into her eyes.

Mo Yuxi looked at him with deep affection, then nodded solemnly. "As long as you are safe, my heart is content."

Yan Chuan caught the sorrow in her gaze, and a shadow crossed his own face. He shook his head. "Even if I escape, there’s no guarantee I’ll survive."

"There is still a sliver of hope. Husband, go now—quickly!" Mo Yuxi shook her head, voice trembling.

Yan Chuan stared at her, closed his eyes, then threw his head back and drew a long breath. He opened his eyes and looked at her tear-stained face, forcing a rare smile. "With you as my wife, what more could a man desire?"

"Husband!" Mo Yuxi pushed him away.

Yan Chuan gently shook his head. "No one shall harm you while I live. No one!"

"But, husband, we’re almost out of time!" Mo Yuxi said, despair in her voice.

Determination flared in Yan Chuan’s eyes. He pulled Mo Yuxi into his arms and pressed his lips fiercely to hers.

The kiss chased away some of Mo Yuxi’s terror.

"Remember, you are my woman, Mo Yuxi. Live well. After I die, mourn me as my widow!" Yan Chuan said, his voice commanding.

He settled the dazed Mo Yuxi against the wall and searched the cave, finding a sharp stone.

"Husband, what are you doing?" Mo Yuxi asked, confused.

"I told you, I will protect you for life! The wolves are coming. I’m going out to kill them!" Yan Chuan’s eyes flashed with resolve.

"No, husband, you know no martial arts. You cannot kill them!" Mo Yuxi cried out in alarm.

Yan Chuan turned back to her, offering a smile tinged with heroic sadness.

"I, Yan Chuan, will not stand by and let my wife die. If the wolves are full, they’ll stop hunting. I may not kill them, but at least I can feed them," Yan Chuan said, his voice solemn.

With those words, Yan Chuan strode out of the cave.

"I may not kill them, but at least I can feed them."

"I may not kill them, but at least I can feed them."

……

……

……

Yan Chuan’s words thundered in Mo Yuxi’s mind. In that moment, she was utterly stunned. Feed the wolves? With what? With himself?

Mo Yuxi’s heart clenched painfully, her nose stung with sorrow.

"No!" Mo Yuxi cried out.
