Chapter 122: A Sudden Disturbance!
“Fengzi, what have you discovered?” Seeing Qin Feng smile, Zhan Ying sensed that Qin Feng seemed to have uncovered something.
“Look at the mist within the Mist Forest,” Qin Feng said softly, pointing toward the swiftly shifting fog. He felt that this mist held great significance.
“The mist is moving faster,” Hei Lang observed.
“I see it too,” Fei Ying added.
“That’s right,” Xue Bao also spoke up, sensing the mist swirling more rapidly, almost like a surging tide.
“Is this mist connected to our breakout?” Zhan Ying asked. He had just noticed the man-eating ants pouring out of the Mist Forest, which presented them with an opportunity. Could it be that this fog also offered a chance? Suddenly, he recalled the diversion tactic Qin Feng had mentioned earlier and his eyes brightened with realization. “Fengzi, could this be related to the feint?”
“Yes,” Qin Feng nodded. “The southeast wind is growing stronger—truly a blessing. See, as the wind intensifies, the mist within the forest thickens and moves faster. Once this mist drifts beyond the forest, that will be our moment to break through.”
Qin Feng studied the rapidly shifting mist, recognizing their chance. The fog was toxic; inhaling it could poison a person and diminish their combat effectiveness. But they were prepared, covering their noses and mouths with damp cloths to prevent inhalation, thus minimizing the mist’s impact. With their superior fighting ability, they could handle the 2,000 enemies waiting for them.
With this in mind, Qin Feng felt confident they could break out. Determination shone in his eyes—they must seize the moment when the mist spills from the forest, harness its power to strike unexpectedly and swiftly attack the enemy force of 2,000, launching a fierce assault to break free.
At the same time, the mines planted 1,500 meters away needed to be detonated to mislead the enemy into thinking the breakout would occur there. This diversion would draw the enemy’s attention away, aiding their escape.
He believed the feint strategy was viable.
“Everyone, be ready. We’ll break out at any moment,” Qin Feng said, looking at his comrades. He sensed the opportunity was imminent, and once grasped, they could break through.
---
Such a golden opportunity was not one Zhang Cheng wanted to miss.
“Understood,” everyone nodded in unison. They picked up their weapons, fully geared, ready to break out at a moment’s notice.
Qin Feng raised his Type 88 sniper rifle, peering carefully through the scope. He aimed at the minefield 1,500 meters to the southeast. The plan was to detonate the mines the moment the mist drifted out, drawing the attention of the 2,000 enemies, while they slipped away northwest under cover of the fog.
At that moment, Qin Feng noticed something odd with the 2,000 enemies. The man-eating ants continued crawling swiftly but showed no signs of retreat. Although they didn’t attack the people directly, they swarmed around them, as if waiting for the right moment.
The enemy had lit bonfires on the ground, clustering tightly around the flames, unwilling to stray for fear of provoking the ants. These man-eating ants were terrifying creatures—flesh-eating, bone-chewing monsters that left nothing behind.
The crowd seemed calm, yet suddenly, someone became agitated and violent, losing control and descending into madness.
“What’s happening?” Qin Feng saw a man raise his gun and start firing wildly in all directions while shouting incoherently. The surrounding people scattered, desperate to avoid stray bullets that could prove fatal.
Chaos erupted instantly. People ran frantically, avoiding the gunman, the scene descending into utter turmoil.
As the crowd dispersed, some fled beyond the safety of the bonfire’s glow and into the territory of the man-eating ants. The ants, furious at the loss of many comrades, launched a furious counterattack.
Many were bitten savagely, their flesh torn and mangled, some were surrounded and continuously gnawed upon, even to the bones—a horrifying spectacle that sent chills down the spine.
The scent of blood intensified, stoking the ants’ fury. They became even more brutal and relentless in their assault.
People rolled on the ground, screaming in agony, the scene resembling a living hell.
---
“This is beyond imagination,” Qin Feng muttered, stunned by the sudden carnage. What was this? Infighting?
Zhan Ying, Hei Lang, Fei Ying, and Xue Bao also witnessed the madness outside the Mist Forest, exchanging shocked glances. This chaos far exceeded their expectations.
Although the jungle beyond the Mist Forest was dim, the bonfires cast flickering light, revealing the movements and shapes of the people.
Amidst the firelight, Qin Feng saw some individuals firing wildly at the ants while shrieking hysterically, their eyes bloodshot and wild. They appeared possessed, utterly deranged, their gaze haunting and terrifying.
Yet after mere moments, these people collapsed backward, their guns still firing uncontrollably, wounding and even killing nearby comrades.
The struggle and screams continued—an utterly dreadful scene.
More people began abandoning the fires, sensing no safety there anymore. If a companion was randomly firing, being hit could mean death.
“What’s going on?” Zhan Ying asked Qin Feng, bewildered by this unforeseen turn of events.
“The man-eating ants’ bites are poisonous,” Qin Feng explained, realization dawning. “Their venom attacks the heart and mind, causing victims to become violently agitated, lose control, and descend into madness. They can no longer control their bodies or distinguish friend from foe, leading to the chaotic shooting. This is why the people outside the Mist Forest are in disarray.”
