Chapter 16: The Gaze of Death
Fortunately, at the last moment, Chao Xu still chose to trust her own integrity, firmly believing she had not made a move on anyone.
However, the disappointed, dewy look in Ci Mo’s eyes across from her still made her feel guilty, and she instinctively wanted to avoid his gaze.
Why did she always have the illusion that she was some heartless scoundrel who abandoned others after a fling?
[Host, you’re up so early—wait, why am I sleeping on the floor?]
Just as the atmosphere plummeted to freezing, the furry ball’s voice broke the silence.
It felt an ache in its waist, along with the sensation of a cold, piercing stare fixed on it.
Chao Xu breathed a sigh of relief, turned, and picked the ball of fluff up from the floor, giving it a gentle squeeze. “It’s your own fault for sleeping so poorly—you rolled right off the bed.”
[Is that so? That can’t be right... I remember I used to sleep very well.]
Back in the system’s shared quarters, it had always slept obediently. How had it ended up tumbling to the floor in this world?
It couldn’t figure it out.
Sprawled lazily on Chao Xu’s shoulder, the furry ball began to mutter to itself.
Looking at the soft, limp bundle on her shoulder, Chao Xu pondered for a moment and said, “Aren’t you worried about being so brazen, just lying there? What if someone sees you?”
She’d wanted to ask this yesterday—a creature that looked for all the world like a lump of sticky rice cake, speaking human words, yet not a single person seemed to find it odd.
[Did I never tell you, Host? I’m a being of super-intelligence, and I don’t belong to this world. So, aside from you, no one should be able to see me.]
Unless there were some special circumstances—but in this world, that was impossible.
The furry ball thought as much and couldn’t help but rub its little paws together.
For some reason, it still felt a chilly, deadly stare from behind. By all logic, no one should be able to see it. Was it just its imagination?
Hearing the ball’s words, Chao Xu glanced at Ci Mo, who was sitting on the bed.
Ci Mo, seeing Chao Xu look over, returned her gaze. His clear, azure eyes were filled with her reflection, as if he hadn’t noticed the ball of fluff on her shoulder in the slightest.
It seemed the ball was telling the truth.
Having roughly confirmed this, Chao Xu didn’t dwell further on the matter. She ruffled her messy hair, touched her grumbling stomach, and prepared to go downstairs for breakfast.
Seeing her about to leave, Ci Mo followed closely behind, so clingy that Chao Xu almost felt as if she’d picked up a stray dog yesterday.
When they reached the dining room, the housekeeper had already prepared a full table of food in advance.
Perhaps it was because he had given Gu Zhongming a good beating the night before, but now the housekeeper’s face was glowing with satisfaction, as if the words “in a great mood” were written all over it.
Seeing Chao Xu come downstairs, he greeted her with a beaming smile. “Miss, you’re awake. Would you like to have something to eat first?”
